Meet Marina Rincón and MJN Neuroservices, the IMAGINE IF! Barcelona winners

Marina Rincon-Torroella is passionate about analyzing and improving the healthcare system. She defines herself as a workaholic; something that we found apparent when we looked at her career path so far. She works at Mayo Clinic and wears many hats. Her main focus at Mayo Clinic is to assist with their business development. Outside of work she is involved with MJN Neuroserveis; a start-up that focuses on the prevention of seizures -a first of its kind. She did not stop there and has since created her own start-up Weallare.Co, which provides custom solutions for physical therapy patients.

A driving thought in all of her work comes from her favorite saying: “First I learn the rules to play the game, then I change the rules to better the game”. This is what defines her attitude towards her choices.

  • Marina, thank you for agreeing to give this interview despite your busy schedule. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, your experience as an entrepreneur, your current position in the Mayo clinic in Florida, and your role in MJN Neuroserveis?

I trained as a physical therapist at The Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). During my last internship in the Netherlands as the physical therapist of the under 21 national basketball team, I soon realized that this was not the optimal career path for me. In 2014 I was awarded a scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in biodesign, innovation and entrepreneurship in Barcelona, where I evolved my business-oriented mind. However, what defined my career goals was my later work experience in the hospital treating palliative patients and elderly people. They taught me the value of life and to pursue your goals with passion and happiness. That is where I dedicated my career goal to understand and improve the healthcare system in order to create an efficient system to offer better treatment to our society, to my family and to myself.

I will always remember the stories of my patients and their needs.  That was the turning point  for building my early stage start-up in design and physiotherapy – WeallareCo with my co-founder Fanny Basanta.  Our company creates personalized devices according to each person’s needs.

At that time, I stopped working in Spain and I moved to the USA to learn about the private sector where I started working at Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore. There, I was fortunate to meet Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, the current chair of Neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic, whose career and patient-oriented passion to find a cure for cancer inspired me to have  the courage to keep fighting for a better healthcare system.   a cure for cancer inspired me to have  the courage to keep fighting for a better healthcare system.

At the Mayo Clinic, my work focuses on improving the communication strategy towards the patients through understanding and implementing their needs.

During my first months at Mayo Clinic, I was contacted by David Blánquez, the CEO of MJN Neuroserveis who asked me to help them with  their international relationships and with their participation in the IMAGINE IF! Acceleration Program. I had no doubts.  Having the chance to collaborate with a company in my home city to improve the epilepsy community as MJN does; I immediately said yes!

  • That brings me to my next question. Last year you represented MNJ Neuroserveis in the IMAGINE IF! Accelerator Program. Can you tell us about your experience during this program and how it has helped you with the business development plans of MJN Neuroscience?

I really enjoyed the whole process and experience! IMAGINE IF! has greatly increased the visibility of MJN Neuroserveis and has helped us to expand our network. I have developed  great relationships with the mentors and the people involved.  For many of them, we are still in contact, helping each other. While in Oxford, I felt it was a great opportunity to jump into a new market.  I was able to reach more people that were able to support and help us during and after the program.  If the end-goal of any start-up is to reach the patient and increase your visibility, then IMAGINE IF! is a great opportunity for everyone.

  • What would your advice be for the 2018 IMAGINE IF! applicants?

My first piece of advice is to be prepared for it and apply or participate only if you are willing to devote your time to it.  Everyone who is willing to attend has to go to the lectures and get the most out of them.  Do not apply just for the sake of applying, but because you want to win!

Finally, in my opinion, what you need to get from IMAGINE IF! depends on the stage of your start-up. In IMAGINE IF! you can encounter both late and early stage start-ups.  This is a great opportunity for future applicants, especially those at early stages, to exchange information and learn from each other and their mentors.  Enjoy the whole process, because you can only benefit from it.

  • What is the current stage of MJN Neuroscience’s business development?

MJN Neuroserveis has already closed the second round of investment of €750.000 and we are doing a clinical trial with Clinica Corachan.  We have also recently been awarded another program that has given us the opportunity to be part of the Mobile World congress and increase our visibility internationally.

  • As you already mentioned, you are also a co-founder of WeallareCo. What is the purpose of the company?

Fanny Basanta, my co-founder, or as we like to call each other “Co” and I have created WeallareCo to help people with diverse physical realities and needs with new products.  We personalise devices according to patients’ needs to facilitate their daily activities.  Our first product is SILMA, a glove for upper and passive prosthetics that protects the user from possible damage while helping maintain day-to-day functionality.  Last November, we received our first public funds as the winners of the Mujer Emprendedoras contest from Madrid and we were selected for AirB&B as women entrepreneurs in Spain.  Weallare.Co is an early stage; we are sourcing funds to obtain the CE mark and tonstart selling SILMA.

  • Finally, I would like to know your views on how we can accelerate the integration of science and innovation in the healthcare system in Spain?

I will quote one of my mentors at Mayo Clinic, Adam Thompson, who taught me something I think is key for the future and for any acceleration of innovation in healthcare.

He said, “if your colleagues do not understand what you are sharing with them, just educate them”.  Thus, if we want to accelerate the integration of science and innovation in Spain, we have to educate and create the environment to make it happen.  Technology is becoming key in developing new treatments and solutions for our patients.  We need to educate not only the future, but also the current doctors, nurses, physical therapists and caregivers with an innovative-science mindset.  Translational science is key in research and the hea

lthcare community needs to understand how to translate their basic findings into the clinic and transform them into practical solutions.  We need to educate scientists to communicate their ideas in a more business-oriented manner and always think out of the box.  This also implies that some policies and old-fashioned educational programs have to drastically change, and investment must support research and innovations.

We all need to influence the environment to drive innovation in healthcare, and education and investment are key to make that happen!

Early recognition determines prognosis but lumbar puncture (LP), invasive and potentially hazardous, to draw a sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is the only method available to confirm/exclude the diagnosis. If CSF white blood cell (WBC) count is increased, aggressive antibiotic treatment to cover meningitis is immediately administered while waiting for bacteriologic results available after 48h.

NX≈SWIM
I am Kay Eckelt, doctor of genetics, data-scientist, elite triathlete and the founder of NX≈SWIM | Barcelona. Our mission is to make swimming more accessible, more effective and more fun, for everybody … which, nowadays it isn’t. Therefore, we developed “treadmill for swimmers” that consists of a swim harness, a sensor and a mobile app. Like this, you train efficiently even in smallest pools in hotels, gyms and homes. The app analyzes your swimming, coaches you and gives warnings in case of injuries. You can do virtual competitions to yourself or big stars (Michael Phelps & co). Our social mission is to help those who can’t swim.

OmniCane
In this hyper-connected world, there are specific groups that are consistently left behind. We aim to close the mobility gap between the visually impaired and the rest of society. In Europe, there are 912.000 blind people and approximately 12 million people with significant visual limitations. Many will be able to benefit from highly advanced assistant technology being developed by OmniCane in the form of a unique pedestrian guidance device. OmniCane combines a series of sensors, electrical actuators, and micro-controllers to better asses the user on its navigation path and provide them with tools to leverage their disability. This represents a huge jump from the traditional cane since it increases their safety and obstacle detection while enhancing urban navigation using state-of-the art technology.

Panakeia
Panakeia, a company formed by a multidisciplinary group of people coming from new technologies world.
We want to apply this new technologies in eHealth because we think there are still several problems where technology could be the key of their solution and new technologies can help people to have a better life.

Where does science meet business?

Innovation Forum Barcelona: Oriol, tell us a bit about your background and why did you accept the challenge to move back to Barcelona to create IQS Tech Factory from scratch.

Oriol Pascual: My background is as environmental engineer, although I spent most of my professional career as a business developer, working on bringing cleantech products to the market. In 2007, while living in The Netherlands, I was responsible for setting a cleantech incubator at the port of Rotterdam. Since then, I’ve been working with science and technology-based startups. I returned to Barcelona some 5 years ago, and collaborated with several incubation and acceleration programs in the city (public and private). Currently, I’m in charge of IQS Tech Factory, where we promote and support science-based entrepreneurship.

IQS has a long tradition as a university from which students build companies, especially of industrial kind. In 2015, IQS decided to create a structure to promote and support this kind of startups. Most entrepreneurship programs in Barcelona are IT-related, and this is great. However, are the industrial companies the ones contributing to productivity and added value. This is what IQS Tech Factory is about.

IFB: How do you see the Barcelona entrepreneurial ecosystem at the moment?

OP: Barcelona’s entrepreneurial ecosystem has exploded in the lasts 5-7 years. This is not unique to Barcelona. A couple of reasons for this explosion; Firstly, we used to think that entrepreneurship was some sort of magical thing, difficult to explain. Companies were built by people that were at the right place at the right time. Now we know what steps are necessary to start a company while reducing risks. The result is the democratization of entrepreneurship. It can be taught and learnt. And there’s plenty of resources out there for the curious ones. Secondly, IT has made it possible to kick-start a project within a few days, at a very low cost and low risk, while potentially having a large impact and growth potential. This means that a couple of friends coming together on a weekend can already validate some initial ideas and let their project start developing.

These are global trends of course. What is important in Barcelona, however, is that the critical mass of the right ingredients to create a powerful entrepreneurial ecosystem is now in place in this city. Number one being talent. Local people are very well prepared and willing to start entrepreneurial projects. And Barcelona is attracting lots of really talented international people that come here in search of quality of life, but bring with them the talent and their own entrepreneurial projects. If you have talent and an interesting project, the rest is already here: governmental support, private financing, support programs like accelerators, mentors networks, etc. Barcelona entrepreneurial ecosystem is growing in the right direction.

IFB: What is the potential of Barcelona in the areas of science-based entrepreneurship or deep technology as we like to call it at the Innovation Forum?

OP: I believe the potential is huge. Again, it’s all about attracting and retaining the right talent. As mentioned earlier, Barcelona has a large number of excellent research centers as well as large companies that run their own research departments.  This is definitely an opportunity for Barcelona to position itself and differentiate from other cities in Spain.

We’re already doing very well in the life-sciences area, with plenty of programs and initiatives. It wouldn’t hurt to expand and include other industrial sectors. Deep technology is maybe not as sexy as candy-related mobile games, but production-focused industrial companies are the ones creating long-lasting economic impact. The building blocks are here: many existing success stories, innovation from universities and research centers, talented people….we only need to believe that our unique scientific idea has the commercial potential .

IFB: Why did you decide to partner with the Innovation Forum and co-organise the WHAT IF! Accelerator?

OP: It’s been a while now that I know the Innovation Forum, and I believe it is a great organization. So, I’m a fan right from the start! We’ve been looking for synergies between the Innovation Forum and Tech Factory and when the Innovation Forum Barcelona team told us about the WHAT IF! Accelerator program, it was clear that this was the opportunity we were looking for. It’s going to be great to work together with the Innovation Forum to identify talent and new science-based ventures in the Barcelona area. I believe that together we are going to add great value to the early stage projects. Leveraging our networks will allow us to bring amazing mentors as well as valuable connection to the industrial companies and investors.

The Innovation Forum is an organization we respect, and to be able to work towards creating an entrepreneurship culture among scientists in Barcelona is definitely a great goal that we share!

Empowering science-based entrepreneurship in Barcelona

In the last 15 years, Barcelona has become one of the most important cities in life sciences and technology research. Sustained funding from the Catalan government and many talent recruitment programs brought top-class researchers and research facilities to the city. Currently, Barcelona is ranked 8th worldwide, in the production of high impact peer-review research articles (per capita), and 2nd in the number of the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grants awarded. Barcelona is — maybe for the first time in history — a global leader in the generation of knowledge and ground-breaking discoveries. It is therefore high time for the region to start capitalizing on this excellent track record and translate the research into new products and services that will benefit the wider society.

To help awaken the entrepreneurial spirit among the over 5000-strong research community in Catalonia the Innovation Forum Barcelona partnered up with IQS Tech Factory to bring the WHAT IF! Accelerator to the city.

This unique program, run across the whole Innovation Forum network of branches is the first truly global competition and accelerator for deep technology early stage ventures.

The WHAT IF! program will help scientists working on projects with translational potential to understand better the commercial opportunities, get free mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs and to network with industry professionals and investors to accelerate the transition from bench to market.

The first round of the accelerator program launching in April 2016 with the theme ‘Improving Life’ is targeting all teams with ideas within the fields of biotech, pharma, e-health, clean tech and other technologies that will help to improve human and animal health and wellbeing.

After the regional phase the best teams from Catalonia will compete with regional winners from other leading innovation hubs globally for the opportunity to pitch at the Grand Finale during the Innovation Forum’s Leaders Conference hosted at the University of Cambridge in the UK.

The WHAT IF! Barcelona is ready for a kick-off so stay tuned for more news and start polishing your business pitches!

* We define deep technology as technology based on genuine, novel scientific idea which has a significant impact on improving human or animal wellbeing (e.g. new medicines, medical devices, new materials or engineering solutions helping to preserve the natural environment in a balanced state).
